Ashling’s football odyssey commenced at Ballinrobe Town, where she donned the club colors from U-12s all the way to the senior team. Her tireless work ethic, innate talent, and leadership qualities quickly caught the attention of fans and fellow players alike. Ashling’s time at Ballinrobe Town laid the foundation for what would become an illustrious chapter in football.
In 2007, Ashling signed for Castlebar Celtic. As an outstanding goalkeeper. Her presence in goal and appearances in the Mayo league and Connacht cups were nothing short of superb. Aishling’s commitment to excellence propelled her into the women’s national league, where she continued to shine.
Ashling’s journey extended beyond club football. She proudly represented Connacht at the U-16 and U-18 levels, showcasing her goalkeeping and leadership skills against the best in the region. But her ambitions knew no bounds. Ashling’s talent caught the eye of national selectors, and she donned the green jersey for Ireland at the U-15 and U-17 levels. Her performances were a testament to her unwavering dedication and love for the game.
As her playing days evolved, Ashling progressed into coaching. At Castlebar Celtic, she took charge of the U-13s and U-18s girls’ teams. Her coaching acumen, combined with her innate understanding of the game, helped transform their talented players into champions. The U-18s would later clinch the national title, a testament to Ashling’s ability to nurture and inspire.
Back to Where It All Belongs
In her own words, Ashling Concannon reflects on her journey: “Now I’m back home to where it all belongs.” Her return to Ballinrobe Town AFC now as Head Coach completes a circle—a circle of passion, growth, and unwavering commitment to the game.
Club Co-Chairperson Alan Dowling went on to say, “we are delighted to have secured the services of someone of Ashlings talents. We have a picture of her on the wall in the clubhouse in her Ireland kit and so for her to return as our new Head Coach fills us with immense pride as well excitement for the season ahead.”
Alan went on to say that the club would like to acknowledge and wholeheartedly thank both Brian Farrell and John Culhane for their unwavering commitment to developing women’s football in our club. Between them over 30 years coaching for the Robesiders can look forward to enjoying games at the Green now as supporters. We now have close to 35% female participation and teams now at every age in the club and this is in no small part to the foundations laid by John and Brian.
