A strong performance for the Robe who defeat the Covies 6-3 in an epic clash.

Our O42s put in possibly their best performance of the season again Westport United last evening. Following our first defeat of the campaign against Castlebar Town last week the lads could ill afford another defeat.

The robe siders started the stronger with and JP O'Gorman finding the net following a great run and cross by James O'Malley who found our number 9 for a tap in to open the scoring on 4 minutes. On 13 mins Peter Staunton played a good ball forward to JP O'Gorman who despite two defenders in close attention managed to jink to his right and fire a rasper across the keeper and into the corner of the net on 13 mins to put us two up. The lads were putting a great performance and we scored our third of the night on 19 minutes when a Westport throw in towards a defender was intercepted by the lively James O'Malley who found himself clean through on goal. The attacker finished calmly through the keepers legs to put Ballinrobe in a really strong position 3-0 up with half time approaching. With a minute to the break however a huge moment occurred when robe keeper Padraic Costello went down injured which improved a massive turning pt as the boys led 3-0 at half time.

With Costello's injury a reshuffle was required which seemed to upset the lads rhythm as Westport flew out of the blocks and 3 goals in a 7 minute window from the Covies saw the game level and all momentum with the west Mayo side. That was until the marauding Peter Staunton was felled as he charged forward. Freekick award and a goal of the season contender for James O'Malley whose free kick arrowed into the top corner to put the robe 4-3 to the good on 41 minutes. This goal seemed to settle the lads again and they struck again immediately on 42 mins when a dangerous ball into the box from John O'Donnell was dummied by James O'Malley which deceived the United keeper and the ball flew into the corner of the net to put us 5-3 up. O'Donnell was not finished yet and with 2 minutes to play he followed up a goal mouth scramble to fire the ball high to the net for the final goal of the evening and a 6-3 victory for the robe who climb to second in the table.

A great all round team performance who despite a blip early in the second half got the job done. Next Wednesday the lads will face Claremorris in another tough encounter but will no doubt travel to Umbro Park in confidence after last evenings performance.
